Mrs. Whaleys’s Garden Charleston SC
I love my Charleston garden and consider myself so fortunate to have it. But I have many other favorite Charleston gardens. Today I am taking you along to visit one of my favorite private Charleston gardens. It is the most visited private garden in America.
Tucked behind a pre Revolutionary War home at 58 Church Street you will find Mrs. Whaley’s Garden. Emily Whaley and her husband Ben purchased the 1754 Charleston single in 1938 and raised their daughters in the home. In 1942 they commissioned Landscape Architect Loutrel Briggs to design a plan for the 30 x 110 garden behind the home.
The garden is ever changing and such an experience. What a treat to see Mrs. Whaley’s classic garden principals being utilized and keeping her legacy alive. You can read about Mrs. Whaley in the book Mrs. Whaley and her Charleston Garden. She also wrote Mrs. Whaley Entertains and Mrs Whaley’s Kitchen.
I normally visit the garden several times a year. It is such a treat. But this week it was a special treat as I had the garden all to myself. A very first for me in all that years that I have been visiting the garden. Make sure to stop by when in town and if you’ve in Charleston it is a great spot to relax and take in a beautiful Charleston garden.

One Of The Biggest Mythes In The Real Estate Industry
Top Realtor in Charleston SC, Lisa Patterson shares one of the biggest myths in real estate. Working with the listing agent does not save you money! I am not sure why buyers think it does or who would tell them that. Lisa breaks down how the fees are pre determined and why it is so important to have representation. Buying a home in Charleston, SC give Lisa I call for answers to any questions you have.
Sweetgrass Baskets Charleston SC
Lisa Patterson a top producing Realtor in Charleston, SC shares the art of the sweetgrass basket. The baskets appeared in the Lowcountry in the late 17th century. Used in rice production and later making it's way to household use.
The art of the sweetgrass baskets is passed from generation to generation and is the oldest African craft in America.
Basket sales soared around 1931 after Grace Memorial Bridge was constructed and highway 17 was paved. Lottie Moultrie Swinton had a vision and took her baskets and placed a chair along highway 17 and started selling her baskets. Thus roadside basket stands were born.
Lisa collects the baskets and has for years. I purchase all of my baskets from Mildred located at the Four Corners of Law. She started selling baskets with her grandmother at the age of seven. She is still seen daily making her baskets in the same location. Makes sure to stop by the Four Corners of Law and see Mildred making her baskets.

Everyone loves chocolate. Today we are visiting my favorite chocolatier Adam Turoni's store, Chocolat by Adam Turoni. Adam tells stories via chocolate. His business partner Alexandra designs the beautiful shops. It is a whimsical place and full of chocolate that looks like works of art. Adam and Alexandra met at a cocktail party. The Establishment Charleston SC
Lisa Patterson a top Real Estate Agent in Charleston SC shares one of her favorite restaurants. The Establishment located at 28 Broad Street in the historic James Gregory house is a must when it comes to dining in Charleston, SC. Using ingredients sourced locally everything on the menu is amazing. Seafood, chicken with truffles, watermelon sorbet and figs with mascarpone were just a few of the things I sampled this visit. I love the bar area where they serve my favorite cocktail - the Stylist. It is such a great atmosphere and the staff is fabulous. If you live in Charleston it is such a great spot for dinner or to meet friends for drinks. If visiting Charleston it is a must.
Waterfront Park Charleston SC
Waterfront Park is one of my favorite things to do when walking in Charleston, SC. In the morning’s I love to watch the dolphins play. People watching while having lunch on a park bench is always fun. The water views are always beautiful. And watching the children play in the fountain on a hot summer day always places a smile on my face.
However, Waterfront Park was not always a fun and beautiful place. Long ago it was a ship wharf. Mayor Joe Riley, after taking office, thought the 8 acre tract of land along the Cooper River, would be a beautiful park setting for locals and tourist to enjoy. Years of hard work and raising funds paid off, however, before the park could open Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston. But again hard work paid off and the park opened just a couple weeks past the original scheduled date.
Make sure to enjoy Waterfront Park while visiting Charleston, SC. And if you are new to Charleston, SC make sure to stop by. Buying or selling a home in Charleston, I am always happy to help.
A Cute Story About A Custom Paint Color
When I was restoring a 1777 kitchen house a few years back in Charleston SC I wanted to keep the original pink exterior color. The stucco was in bad shape and required work and that included a new paint job.
I made multiple attempts purchasing samples of paint and trying to match that original perfect pink exterior. But nothing worked. The paint was too bright - like pesto pink or had an orange tint or was too light.
I heard about a gentleman at Spectrum Paint in Charleston, that was a natural at matching paint colors. I peeled stucco off my house and off I went to see if it could be matched. With my new sample in hand I rushed home to test the color. To my surprise it was a perfect match. And the next thing I knew when ordering my paint I had a custom paint color!
I have restored 37 historic homes. If you are buying or selling a home in Charleston SC I am a wealth of information. Until next time on Lisa’s List.
Big Gun Bar and Burgers
Everyone knows that Charleston is known for fabulous food. But it is not always about fine dining in Charleston. We do have some hip places to dine and have fun. I recently heard about a place that seemed like a lot of fun. So of course I had to check it out.
Big Gun Burger and Bar has great food, I love the pimento cheese as we all do in the south! It was a fun place and the staff is very friendly. Half off burger night, shoot a game of pool and sing some karaoke. I will certainly go back. Until next time on Lisa’s List.
Closet Reveal
It is time to reveal the closet. I have had so many people asking if it was complete. A few more things and it will be totally finished. But we can reveal now!
This has been my favorite item on the list of renovations. It is now like shopping in a small boutique in the mornings. And it certainly cuts down the time it now takes me to get ready. Now I can find everything and I am organized.
You will see we created a lot of storage but I also used art, color, and nice lighting. Just because it is a closet does not mean you cannot decorate! I hope this provides you with closet inspiration.
When purchasing a historic home in Charleston SC closet space is normally an issue unless the home has been renovated. And for me storage and closet space is a must.
I have a wealth of information on retiring historic homes. I am happy to help with your home purchase in Charleston.
Bathroom Reveal
Many of you have followed the renovations since October 2020. We finally are ready to revel the bathroom. As many know we started with a blank space since we rearranged the layout of the entire upstairs of this house.
It was not an easy project and we encountered many items that held things up or created more work and expense. Typical with a historic home. I love the finished product.
Now we have a nice size bathroom that is timeless. I have included picture of the process along with the video. Enjoy and until next time on Lisa’s List.

My father-in-law lived to be two weeks shy of his 102nd birthday! His mind was still sharp and he still visited with neighbors and knew how to tell a good story. A Charleston story that is. I loved to listen to his stories of Charleston.
