Why I Do Not Stress Over Flooding

In speaking with friends, locals and potential clients I explain why I do not let flooding keep me from enjoying Charleston, the place I call home.

No matter where you live you encounter something you have to deal with.  It may be earthquakes, tornadoes, freezing ice and rain, mud slides and fires.  So you get the picture.  You cannot control mother nature or her wrath.  However, you can be prepared.  Charleston flooding downtown is not raging water and it does not stand for long periods of time.  It’s normally a surge and gone.  Unlike other things such as tornadoes, earthquakes, fires  etc they come without notice or time to prepare. You do not know their path. During our hurricane season we have time to prepare our properties.  I can quickly move furniture to another floor, put  barricades in place to block water and I have yet to have water in my home.

The City of Charleston also has implemented  many different systems and are working on more projects to address flooding.  There is also many things that you can do as a home owner to mitigate flooding and many are homemade and very cost effective.  Keith Anderson of Flood Defense Group is an amazing resource.  http://www.flooddefensegroup.com/about.html

I love Charleston and Charleston has been home for many years.  My husband, a Charlestonian reminds me all the time  it’s not called the low country for nothing!  It comes with the territory.  Just like other areas of the country have their  events of mother nature to deal with.

My son is a Metrologist and I have found that the weather like all news can be sensationalized at times.  I have had clients call to cancel their showings and trip to Charleston thinking we are under water.  When it is clear, dry and no standing water!  They tell me by watching national news they think Charleston is under water.

I choose to enjoy my city, the arts, history, cultural, shopping and fine dining.  I choose not to live fearful and to take advantage of all the amazing things Charleston has to offer.
